From the RAF to Ironman: why I started Stronghold Recovery

People often ask what got me into this. It is a fair question, because sports recovery is not the most obvious path. The honest answer is that I have spent most of my life pushing my body hard, and I learned, more than once the hard way, that how you look after it matters just as much as how you train it.

The RAF Regiment taught me the body is the kit

I served eight years in the RAF Regiment. If there is one thing that environment drills into you, it is that your body is the equipment. You look after your kit or it lets you down when it counts. Recovery, mobility, sleep, fuelling, none of it is soft. It is maintenance on the one bit of equipment you cannot replace.

I also saw what happens when people ignore all that. Niggles become injuries, injuries become time out, and the ones who lasted were not always the toughest. They were the ones who managed themselves properly.

Endurance sport showed me it the hard way

After I left the forces I got into endurance sport, and eventually into Ironman, which is a long day of swimming, cycling and running that does not forgive a body you have neglected. I finished a full Ironman at Bolton in 2023 and an ultra from Carlisle to Newcastle in 2025, and training for those taught me the same lesson at a different volume. When I recovered well, I trained well and stayed healthy. When I cut corners, I broke down. Simple as that.

Somewhere in the middle of all those early mornings and sore legs, I got properly interested in the recovery side, the massage, the cupping, the contrast work, the stuff that actually kept me on the start line.

Why mobile, and why Doncaster

I qualified as a sports therapist and made a deliberate choice about how to do it. Not a clinic people have to travel to, but a mobile service that comes to them. I remembered how easy it is to skip recovery when it is an effort, and how much more it happens when it is not. So I bring it to your home, your gym, or your event, right across Doncaster and the surrounding areas.

The training behind it is real, not just enthusiasm. But the enthusiasm is real too, because I have felt the difference myself, on my own start lines.

The same standard for you as for me

Stronghold Recovery is built on a simple idea. The recovery I would want for myself before a big race is the recovery I bring to your door, whether you are training for something, playing sport at the weekend, or just want to stop seizing up at your desk.

If that sounds like something you have been meaning to sort, get in touch. I would be glad to help you look after the one bit of kit you cannot replace.
